Drawing:
7th: Introduced scratchboard and students made rough draft sketches.
8th: Introduced graffiti and stencil art.  Here is the prezi we looked out.  Here is a link explaining how to use gimp, the free online program to help make stencils.

Utah Studies:
We went over marketing.  Students created an advertisement to promote skiing in Utah.

March 18-21

I was here for one A and B day and had a substitute for one A and B day during this time.

Utah Studies:  On the day I was here students took notes on economics and bartering and we did a simulation on a bartering economy.  Steps 5, 7, and 8 of the road trip should have been turned in. Make sure you're on track to get your final road trip turned in by next week!  When the substitute was here they finished their book work in their economics packet and read from chapter 10.

Drawing:  Students chose one of their rough drafts to turn into a final for the Navajo sand painting project and started working on the final.  When the sub was here students worked on the doodle for google submission.

March 12-13

Utah Studies:  We are having a catch up day for step 7 of the road trip.  Students who are done have free time or can earn arrow cards by helping their classmates who are not caught up.

Drawing:  I introduced sand art.  We watched videos on Buddist monks, Joe Mangrum, and Tony Plant creating sand art.  We looked at a powerpoint on Native American sand art and they filled out art history notes along with the powerpoint.  On the back they free wrote on what in their life they would heal with a sand painting and started sketching some ideas of what their sand painting could look like.

Utah Studies:

We worked on steps 5, 8, and 9 of the road trip--making an iPod playlist, packing list and cover.  Some students chose to do the cover at home on the computer rather than draw it.  On Monday, for the extra A day, we will have a catch up day.

Drawing:

We learned about environmental art and watched video clips on two environmental artists, Andy Goldsworthy and Vik Muniz.  Students got in groups, went outside and created their own environmental artwork.  For the extra A day on Monday we will have a catch up day.

Today we worked on step 7 of the road trip.  It will be due on February 25th!  This is the last week to retake the test for unit 3.

Students did this sketchbook evaluation and peer evaluation.  They had today to catch up on their sketchbook.

Utah Studies: A Day worked on book work with their new economics packet.  B day finished the mining video while "mining" the chocolate chips out of cookies.

Drawing: They finished their brainstorming and front/side views of their cartoon characters.  When finished they started on their practice comic book cover or comic.  The book cover will need the title, character sketch, and background.  The comic needs at least 3 squares, dialogue, and the character in every box.

Feb. 12-13

Utah Studies: the counselor a gave a presentation on college.

Drawing: we started our next project on cartooning. We discussed favorite cartoons or superheroes-- their personality, plot and characteristics. Students practiced drawing Popeye with this video clip.  Then students came up with their original cartoon. They should consider the name, personality, looks, circumstances, props, and sidekicks. They started making thumbnail sketches.  I have characature examples in class. If students want an animal cartoon rather than a human here is a link for how to draw different cartoon animals:

We watched part of "Treasure House," a video on Utah mining.  Students filled out a movie guide with it.

Utah Studies:
They worked on step 7 of their road trip.  We had labtops so most of them did it in drive on their Indian Hills google accounts (first.last@indianhillsmiddle.com).  We will have one more class day to work on this.  But if they did not get a lot done they should start working on it at home.  Here is a copy of an example journal entry.

We had guest speakers come and discuss artist careers. Here is a powerpoint they used.

We looked at both sides of the gun control debate (1,2,3,4) and filled out notes.  Students had time to study for the test.  Remember to study more over the weekend!

Drawing:
Students worked more on their perspective drawing.  Those who finished early worked on perspective lettering or beach drawings.

Utah Studies:
Remember to bring the road trip steps 3,4,6 for next class!  Also, make sure your packet is complete so you will be ready for the test next week.

Today in class we discussed different issues women face.  We watched a video and took notes in the packet on women's suffrage.  We also discussed women in military combat, the wage gap, and equal rights.  Here are some links to what we looked at in class (1,2,3,4,).  Students decided where they stood on the issue after looking at two sides of the debate, then surveyed class members to see where they stood.

Drawing:
Working on their perspective drawings.  If they are finished they are trying out lettering perspective.

Utah Studies:
Worked on their road trip steps 3,4, 6.  This will be due on January 30th.  If they did not get done it is homework.  For step for they only need to find the prices of entry fees.

Drawing:
They worked on their perspective drawings, the room for 7th grade and the city for 8th grade.

Jan. 22-23

Utah Studies:  We had a great field trip to the Capitol and Pioneer Museum.  The kids really enjoyed themselves and we all learned a lot.  In class we did a simulation of how a bill becomes a law.

Drawing: 7th graders learned drawing stairs in perspective then worked on their dream room drawings.  8th grade worked on their city drawings.

Utah Studies:
We played the checks and balances power grab game to illustrate how checks and balances in the government works. If you were absent to make up points for not playing the game you can watch this video and write a one page summary on it.

Drawing:
7th- Practiced adding walls to their room in perspective.  Started it on their final.
8th- Practiced a city-scape in 2 point perspective.

Utah Studies:

Today we used computers and worked on steps 3, 4, and 6 of the road trip assignment.  Remember the field trip is next week--get your permission slips and bus fees turned in!

Drawing:

Today we used computers and created drawings on picassohead.com.  We also looked at art work by Picasso.  Students were to focus on showing multiple points of view at once and on using color to convey emotion.

Utah Studies:  We went over this powerpoint of the Constitution.  Students took notes on the checks and balances flow sheet in their packet.  We read some of Utah and the U.S. constitutions.

Drawing:  We started practicing perspective together.  7th grade did one point and 8th grade did both one and two point.  We also started these prezi's on Picasso (1, 2).
